I’ve been blogging about our mackerdoodle’s constipation problems for some time. We thought they were the result of poor hydration, then a weird teething symptom . . . we just kept an eye out for it, and a stock of glycerin suppositories and figured it was a part of life.
Well, after a few days at Aunty Melissa’s it was no longer so. Breakfast, it seemed, could not pass without our mackerdoodle . . . um . . . also passing. Most often audibly, and copiously. One moring her cousins gave her a standing ovation for the sheer volume (in both meanings) of the thing.
The trip home naturally brought with it some more constipation. Traveling often does with children, and as she is prone to it, we expected it. After four days at home, however, with no relief, and I began to wonder, what did my sister have that I didn’t have.
Apart from three extra kids.
And organizational skills.
And culinary skills.
I mean, what did she have in her menu that had so assisted my daughter’s digestion.
Last week Jonathan decided that he REALLY missed my sister’s home made bread. So on Monday we found a recipe on-line and made a loaf of whole wheat bread in our bread maker. On Tuesday our mackerdoodle had some with her breakfast.
On Tuesday evening our mackerdoodle had a moving experience. And on Wednesday. And on Thursday. Well, you get the idea. Apparently, what my sister has (among other things) that I didn’t, was homemade, whole wheat bread. It’s got my mackerdoodle moving again.

That’s not surprising. Bulk fiber tends to pick up stuff and carry it along on the way out!

This post, plus the price of bread in our markets, has almost convinced me to get my breadmaker out again. [Just for the record , not because I need to have a "moving experience '' necessarily]

It’s amazing what a little fiber will do for a person! ;D
