Yesterday frozen rain fell for most of the day covering everything, including the birds, with a layer of ice. Today we are watching that ice being covered with pellet like snow. The forecast is for an accumulation of between 10 and 20 inches of snow between now and noon on Wednesday with wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour this afternoon and evening.
The world looks like a faded photograph. All of the colors are muted by the ice, and dulled by the falling snow. It’s the sort of snow day in which one stays indoors because to be outside would be dangerous and unpleasant. Jonathan’s classes are canceled, work at Chick-Fil-A is canceled and we find ourselves with an entire day “off”, but staying at home doesn’t feel like a treat to the kids. To help, we started the day with pancakes, and we’ll have pizza for supper – barring power outages or the roof blowing off, both of which would be far more exciting to the children than an entire day, inside, watching the wind through the cracks in the curtains.
The outside world has come to a halt for the next couple of days, frozen in an ice storm/blizzard induced suspended animation, but in our little cocoon of light and warmth and safety, it’s mama’s job to keep the day from becoming frozen with discontent and boredom.
